A week-end indulgence! French LOVE burgers and are very creative to invent new recipes. I have selected 5 easy recipes inspired by French cuisine and devilishly tasty. Want to try my kid’s favorite or my husband’s preferred temptation?

French cheeseburgers

France is a cheese country. We have more cheeses than days in a year… They offer a large choice of options for preparing delicious burgers. These are some ideas below.

If you don’t find French cheese, replace by top quality Cheddar.

French traditional burger recipe

For 4 servings

  • 4 buns
  • 1.5 lbs (680g) ground beef 5 to 10% fat
  • 8 slices Comté or Emmental cheese
  • Herb sauce*
  • Ketchup
  • Caramelized onions*
  • Lamb’s lettuce

For 4 servings

  • 4 buns
  • 1.5 lbs (680g) ground beef 5 to 10% fat
  • Crumbled blue cheese
  • Homemade mayonnaise*
  • Grilled bacon
  • Chopped chives
  • Optional: caramelized onions*

  • 4 buns
  • 17.6 oz (5000g) ground beef 5 to 10% fat
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 16 slices Camembert (1/2 to 3/4 Camembert)
  • Slow simmered onions (with butter)
  • 1 thinly sliced apple

Autumn burger recipe

For 4 servings

  • 4 buns
  • 17.6 oz (500g) ground beef 5 to 10% fat
  • Onion confit*
  • Stir-fried mushrooms*
  • 8 dried tomatoes
  • Arugula
  • Optional: 8 slices Comté or Emmental cheese

  • Preheat the oven to 350°T (180°C). Cut the buns into two pieces and toast them lightly, then lay them out open-faced


  • With onions: Thinly slice onion and combine it with ground beef, salt and pepper. Shape the mixture into 4 patties.
  • Without onions: Shape the meat with your hands into 4 patties
  • Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the patties to the pan. Season with salt and pepper. Cook them to the desired doneness. While cooking, flatten them progressively with a spatula. Take the pan off the heat.
  • Thinly slice the cheese and put it on the meat
  • Toast the buns

* Caramelized onions

  • 4 red onions
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Peel and slice the red onions
  • Put a saucepan on the stove with a dash of olive oil. Add the red onions, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer over low heat for 35 minutes. Stir from times to times.
  • Add the vinegar and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper. Continue to simmer over low heat for 10 minutes (uncovered)
  • Set aside the onions in a bowl

* Herb sauce

  • 2 thinly chopped white onions
  • 1.41 oz (40g) chopped parsley
  • 0.7 oz (20g) chopped chives
  • 2.82 oz (80g) gherkins
  • 6.35 oz (180g) mayonnaise (homemade is better…)
  • a splash of lemon juice
  • a spash of Tabasco
  • 1.06 oz (30g) beetroot germinated seeds (if you find them!)
  • Cub the gherkins
  • Prepare the mayonnaise*
  • Add the lemon juice and the tabasco, the chopped white onions, the chopped herbs, the germinated seeds to the mayonnaise. Mix well
  • Keep in cooler

* Homemade mayonnaise

  • 1 yolk
  • 12 oz (60g) mustard
  • ½ cup (110 ml) sunflower oil
  • In a bowl, whisk mustard with the yolk. Salt and pepper and incorporate a small amount of sunflower seed oil. Once the mixture has begun to thicken and increase in volume, continue to pour very progressively the oil. Keep whisking constantly until you get a smooth texture. Use a wire whisk or a blender.

* Onion confit

  • 2 red onions
  • 2.5 tablespoons (3.5 cl) red wine
  • 4 tablespoons (6.5 cl) liquid honey
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Peel the onions and thinly slice it
  • Pour olive oil into a hot pan. Then add the onions, the honey and a pinch of salt. Let caramelized. Deglaze with red wine and reduce at very low heat
  • Adjust the seasoning and keep warm

* Stir-fried mushrooms

  • Clean the mushrooms with a clean brush, slice them
  • Add the mushrooms in warm oiled pan. Salt. Brown then at high heat

Final touch

  • Half and toast the buns
  • (If relevant), spread the sauce over the buns and top with the meat
  • Add the relevant ingredients of each recipe: onions, ham or grilled bacon, mushrooms, dried tomatoes, salad, herbs, slices of apple…
  • (If relevant), spread ketchup on the other buns
  • Close the bun and enjoy!

To be served with a salad, herbs baked tomatoes or Carrot, pumpkin and sweet potato puree
